The content that goes to your email list should be a step above any other content you’re giving. The reason is that these are people who have expressed interest in you and your offerings already, or who have bought from you. Therefore, the content should be more targeted based on how they got on the list, and more valuable since you know who you’re creating it for and why.

Include social sharing buttons and an "Email to a Friend" button in your marketing emails. That way, you'll gain access to their friends, colleagues, and networks and expand your contact list. At the bottom of your emails, include a "Subscribe" CTA as a simple text-based link so that the people receiving the forwarded emails can easily opt-in, too.

That said, building a list from scratch can seem a little overwhelming at first. After all, newbies are in a bit of a catch-22 situation: They can’t start a campaign without addresses, but they’re often so dependent on email that they don’t know how to ask customers to opt in without emailing them. So how do you build an email list without email addresses? Once you have addresses, what do you do with them? How often should your send emails? What can you do to ensure your emails are delivered and not lost in spam or junk filters?

Some readers will unsubscribe from your email autoresponder, whether it is short or long in duration. It is inevitable. Watch for trends that might indicate a necessary change (e.g. high unsubscribes after a particular lesson), but understand that unsubscribes are a natural part of your list’s equilibrium. Even if people unsubscribe, they were exposed to your content before they did so. Load the beginning of the course with excellence and go from there.


I know the idea of creating a freebie can be stressful (see my post on creating the perfect freebie for more on this!), but it doesn’t have to be all about a freebie or lead magnet. Consider the kind of content you can offer on a weekly or monthly basis that will benefit your readers. Maybe that’s resources or info. Maybe that’s entertainment or encouragement. Don’t let your email come last! Your subscribers are your VIPS, remember? Give them your BEST.

Your blog provides a great way to build a personal relationship with customers and prospects — and to gather their email addresses. Consistently end blogs with a call to action that encourages readers to sign up for your email messages. Require blog visitors to provide an email list in order to leave comments, and set it up so that they have to actively opt out if they don’t want their email address included on your mailing list.
A useful footer. Below your main content is the footer of your email. It should contain a clear and simple way for your reader to unsubscribe, as required by the CAN-SPAM Act. Mention why they are getting the email (they signed up), and how to contact you. Email apps often take care of this for you, but just be sure it is included. The footer area is where you could do “self-advertising” if you wanted to. Keep it simple, if you choose to do it, preferably just one or two “ads” or links.

Shorter copy is powerful. 200-300 words or less is a good rule of thumb if you aren’t using a full blog post, especially if you are sending more than one email a week. We have used this idea of using only part of a blog post in our own emails, making sure that the introductory copy was sufficient to let the reader know exactly what the post was about. Entice without tricking, in other words.


But the real joy here for me, is not the money. It’s that now, because I learned how to turn my readers into subscribers, I now have an AMAZING community of people around me. I can ask them any question and they'll respond. I can start a Facebook group and they'll come join me. I can issue a challenge and they'll rise to it! They can make nearly any endeavor successful because there are so many and they are so engaged. And that is a feeling like none other.  

The first step in creating compelling content is having a clear picture of who you’re writing for. For example, if your business revolves around selling digital design solutions, you have to know what sort of people want design solutions, are they college students or small businesses? Do they want a quick fix or are they looking for permanent solutions? Where do they live? What sort of income do they have?
You might be doing all the right things to generate leads -- landing pages, gated content, contests, and more. The problem might be that the design or copy itself isn't driving the engagement you need. A/B test (also known as "split test") different aspects of your list-building campaigns with different versions of the same content. This includes the call-to-action text, the color of the gated offer, the time of day you're posting to social media, and even where on your website these signup forms are placed. Sometimes a small change can drive hundreds more conversions.
Also, don’t be afraid of “scaring” people off by constantly asking for their email. Popovers are a great way to grow your email list, but many small businesses are afraid to implement them because of their bias perception. SumoMe analyzed 390 million pop-ups over a 1-month span and concluded that popovers, on average, convert emails at a rate of roughly 1.06%. While this might not seem like a high number, it’s still 1 out of 100 visitors and is one more lead for your sales funnel. You can increase your chances of converting with popovers by avoiding boring calls-to-action like “Sign up for our newsletter.”
If you know your target audience, you can set up the prize in a manner will be most appealing only for that segment. For example, if your business sells eco-friendly sneakers, the obvious option would be to give away a pair of the latest sneakers from your line of products. A cheaper and still relevant prize could be recycled coffee mugs, handcrafted jewelry, or organic cotton activewear.

As we mentioned above, simply asking someone to join your newsletter isn’t going to convince them that they are receiving value in return for their contact information.  It’s important to be transparent, convincing and urgent with your opt-in call-to-action. Providing alternatives like these is an effective way to grow a nice big list of subscribers that are targeted to you and what you have to offer them. They are more likely to also be responsive to your website content through the comments section.  This captive audience is worth gold to you, so treat it well. When you market to them, they are more than likely to receive it well.

In addition to all these tools, how about some bonus tips for improving your list building efforts? Use photo/video tools to create captivating content that converts! And by that, we mean use tools like Canva or Zoom to develop and record – freely – visuals, short videos, or webinars. Canva is a great freemium tool that lets you create stunning visuals for pretty much any and every purpose you need. Zoom is more and more becoming the next great thing in live chat and enables you to record your video, so it’s good if you want to have a freebie webinar or short lead magnet messages.

Headline-quality subject lines. The same rules that apply to creating great headlines apply to your email subject line. It has the burden of getting your reader to decide to open the email and not delete it. Ask readers a question directly, hint that you have a solution to a problem, or suggest there is something they don’t know and ought to. MailChimp offers a free tool that lets you test your subject lines out against all of the data they’ve collected on emails that get great open rates.

They are unrelated except that they indicate people are looking for help in dealing with large corporations when they are frustrated. That trend could be a topic. What topics are people reading that are related on your blog?

Product Hunt Every time you launch a new product, chances are it could be a good fit for Product Hunt. To make sure your product gets accepted by the moderators, make sure you reach out to an influential Product Hunter and get them to submit it on your behalf.
